Want my Expo West rundown? DM me!
It’s the biggest natural trade show on the Earth. After 3 straight days of eating only gluten-free vegan snack samples at Expo West, my trend report is almost done.
I don’t want to clog this entire newsletter with TMI, so if you are interested in it, email me at juliek@souled.biz, leave a comment or message me with this button and I’ll send it to you.
Let Women Be Sick in Peace
When parasocial relationships attack their host, isn’t it also a little bit sick?
Kate Middleton’s whole thing is being pre-blamed for the final fall of the monarchy, and even got twisted into why it’s better to be her than Meghan Markle.*
My guess is she’s getting a hysterectomy - which btw 50% of U.S. women age 60 have had.
Why does photoshop matter so much when the Kardashians have been openly doing it for years and people are getting body dysmorphia because of our obsession with photo filters?
And although she raised awareness for a 5-minute breast cancer screening that could save many lives, Olivia Munn got attacked for her breast cancer reveal. People claim her timing was to divert attention from her boyfriend’s ex’s memoir push (PR is a bit early, btw, it drops in August).
In a world where women’s health is under-researched, pain is medically tolerated and we spend 25% more of our lives in debilitating health than men—why is photoshop and gossip our focus?
Because expectations. But maybe this will all change?
Christina Is Many Of Us, All The Time
Christina Applegate outed herself as a woman who’s daring to be angry and frustrated with her MS, versus playing the heroic figure or quietly disappearing.
“I’m flipping the bird all day long at this thing and I’m angry. I’m really, really pissed," Applegate said.
Bigger reveal: She’s been faking being herself this whole time. Many women can probably relate.
"I’ve been playing a character called Christina for 40 years, who I wanted everybody to think I was because it’s easier," she said. "But this is kind of my coming out party. Like, this is ... the person I’ve been this whole time."
"I was kind of putting on a little act for everybody for so long because I just thought that was easier — be light, be funny ... don’t make people uncomfortable," she continued. "And I don’t care anymore."
Female rage is trending. And as Millennials continue to middle-age with its sudden realizations of ageism, looks-ism, misogyny, and that anyone can get sick, I’m expecting a new trend of both honest illness and highly marketed illness accessories.
*Meghan Markle also chose the scandal to tease her American Riviera Orchard brand which will sell spreads, jams and jellies along with a TM-application that hints at a store and lifestyle brand. Classy. While it sounds like a zero-carb word salad, it’s an an allusion to Montecito, which apparently some people (likely Santa Barbara real estate agents) call the American Riveria(?) But hey, it’s got 500K+ IG followers already, so the joke is on me.
More evidence that female darkness is trending: Sociopath, a Memoir is slated to be the book of the spring.
This Week In Reproductive Rights
Over the counter birth control is here, freeing Walgreen’s pharmacists from their positions as judge and jury. the abortion pill comes under attack. Let’s not forget what it took to get here.
Olivia Rodrigo is giving out condoms & plan B at her concerts, working with local agencies in every city. Go Gen Z!
YeeHaw! Beyonce Integrates Country
Until Beyoncé’s recent #1, songs by women of color averaged .06 percent of the airplay on country radio. She’s the 8th Black woman to chart, ever.
But there are other women in the genre starting to make waves, and Indigenous artists, too.
Tanning Beds Are Back & Tanning’s Hot (Again, Still)
“If I didn’t have social media, I really wouldn’t care.”

ENTJ-Red-Unhireable
80% of Fortune 500 companies use personality tests to “codify” their employees, creating a projected $6.5B industry by 2027. And some say it can bias against hiring women.
Just Here for the Croc Charm
Hailey Bieber’s phone case is starting talk on how merch is the new driver of beauty brand sales.
I’d add: Food brands. Example: Goodles ($3.39) sells a $70 macaroni pendant. It’s wait listed!
Poly Grandma, Cautionary Tale?
Time Capsule: The Silver Chain is a new “true no-crime” podcast about a secret suburban swinger’s club in 1970s Minnesota, discovered via a stash of club newsletters in an abandoned safe deposit box.
Expected: a salacious good time with Boogie Nights vibes.
Getting: a gut-punch meditation on aging, untreated mental illness, neglect, and how women train(ed) themselves to work around the desires of others.
With poly/ethical non-monogamy trending these days, the examination of the dark side is timely.
I have to believe there’s a mimeographed and spiral bound Silver Chain cookbook in someone’s basement.
